CNC machining within the thermoforming process

After thermoforming, parts usually require accurate trimming, holes and mounting features. Producing holes and cut-outs after forming allows some design changes to be made in the CNC program without modifying the thermoforming mould.

Two CNC machining options

3-axis machines are suitable for sheets, models and geometries accessible from one direction. 5-axis centres can machine large three-dimensional thermoformed parts, surfaces and edges at different angles. Machine selection depends on the part geometry and size.

Machining large components

The largest 5-axis centre has a working envelope of up to 4000 × 2600 × 1300 mm. It accommodates large tooling models, moulds, three-dimensional components and large thermoformed parts.

Preparing machining data

A machining quotation calls for the material, blank dimensions, quantity and required operations. A 3D model and a drawing with tolerances help distinguish functional dimensions from appearance-critical surfaces. For thermoformed parts, the holding method, tool access and hole positions relative to the formed surface also matter. Achievable tolerances are assessed for the specific material and geometry.
